arangetram gift and attire

I've been studying Bharatanatyam for about two years now and I'm still not clear on a lot of things. This weekend I am attending my first arangetram and just learned that I need to bring a gift! I don't mind bringing a gift, but what does one give for such an occasion?

This is a coworker's daughter who just completed her first year of university. I unfortunately don't know her well enough to know what she likes. I hate to go to my coworker just days before the recital and ask what her daughter might like.

She's got an Amazon wish list, but the only thing on it is a laptop placed there in 2004.

I'm also not clear on what I should wear. I have a few semi-casual salwar kameez, but I don't know how formal or informal to go.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!
